Vault makes it easy to deposit data via four different methods. Which method you use will depend on your specific use case, technical resources, and how much data you are depositing at any one time.

Ways to Upload and Deposit Content
1. Web Uploader
The Web Uploader is Vault’s browser-based deposit, similar to that of many other websites. It has a high upload speed, transfer monitoring, and tools to avoid duplication deposits. It also allows you to deposit a full folder or directory of files all at once, with the option to pause or cancel deposits as needed. The Web Uploader is best used for tens, hundreds, or possibly thousands of files via the Vault web application.
For more information, see Depositing with the Web Uploader.
2. Command Line
The command-line utility for programmatically depositing content into Vault has been developed using a fork of the popular cloud storage command line tool Rclone.
With this tool, you can perform the following tasks with Vault:
- Sync a directory
- Create a collection
- Upload files (from local disk or other cloud providers)
- Upload folders (from local disk or other cloud providers)
- Download files
- Download folders
- Download a collection
- List collection
- List folders
For more information, see Depositing with the Command Line.
3. Mail Drive
- For some users, shipping hard drive(s) is the easiest way to send data for deposit into Vault. We are currently able to deposit content into Vault via hard drives shipped to us. If you are interested in this method of deposit, contact us at vault@archive.org so that we can discuss the details.
4. Import IA Collections
- Many current or future Vault users may already have digital collections hosted by Internet Archive through their use of Archive-It, IA digitization services, or archive.org. We are able to transfer data internally from these services into Vault on an on-demand basis but aim to automate this process in future Vault releases. If you are interested in this method of deposit, contact us at vault@archive.org so that we can discuss the details.
Account Data Budgets
An account data budget exists for all accounts. When using any method to deposit files into Vault, deposits may not be possible if the volume of a deposit exceeds your remaining data budget.
In this scenario, users will see a message on the Deposit page stating “Sorry, but this deposit would exceed your data budget. You can reduce the size of this deposit, or contact the Vault team for more options.”
